Pattern: Cabled Fingerless Mitts by Sharon Hoelzle
Yarn: Knit Picks Swish DK in Doe and Marbled Heather
Needle: US 6 – 4.0 mm
Ravelry Link: Brown Pair, Gray Pair
This is a fabulous pattern written by one of the members of the knitting group I go to on Tuesdays. It’s really easy to understand and, as you can see, super easy to modify without screwing up the structure of the mitt.
My coworker, the fabulous Aubrey, came to work raving about a pair of wool fingerless gloves that her friend had made for her, but expressed a bit of lament over the fact that they were a fuchsia color when she often wears a lot of neutrals. Therefore, when I put in my Xmas order to KnitPicks, I picked up a skein of Swish DK in “Doe” so she would have a nice brown pair of gloves, and picked Sharon’s pattern so she’d have pair that looked different than her fuchsia ones.
Well, Aubrey LOVED her mitts, and then slyly hinted that her birthday was coming up, and wouldn’t it be nice if she had a gray pair of gloves? Well, I didn’t want her to have two that looked the same, so I paged through a book Mom got me for Xmas – Interweave’s Cables & Arans – and modified the glove slightly to use the interlocking cable on page 114. Aubrey signs all her online posts with “;) a xo” so I figured the design would be perfect for her.
On both pairs of gloves, I added ribbing at the top until they seemed to be at the right length for Aubrey’s hands, which are smaller than mine. On the second pair of gloves, I switched all the ribbing to k2p2 instead of k3p3 called for in the pattern for no other reason than I wasn’t paying attention. XD
