That’s right. I don’t just do lace!

The other day Todd asked me when I was going to use the yarn I had “over there” and pointed to my stash corner. I use yarn from there all the time, but I don’t think he counts the one skein it takes to make a shawl, so I grabbed a bunch of yarn and made this kitty bed.

I did this holding 4 strands together since one of my yarns was bulky weight. It used a TON of yarn. I went through about 3.5 balls of Fun Fur, over 2 skeins of Jiffy, and used up 2 balls of mystery acrylic and most of this obscenely giant skein of white acrylic that my mom foisted on me because she didn’t know what the mess to do with it either. It says a lot that I still have some left when I used it for the entire bed.

I made the medium size and did twice the amount of rows for the sides as it called for so I could fold it over. The sides were just way too unstable otherwise. I had the cat get in when they were at the designated rows, and the bed got all misshapen and flopped over when she stretched in it.

Some people have asked how I got my cat into the bed. Basically, Dijjit is used to laying on the couch on a piece of fleece, and we pat the fleece when we want her to come up and she generally will oblige. She decided to oblige me when I patted the bed. She didn’t stay in it for long, but she hopped in, lay down, and stayed put for pettings for the times I was testing height.

The picture at the top of the page, though, she got in by herself and napped for quite some time. This was due to strategic placing. I sometimes put my shawls on those plastic bins, and I’ve often found the cat curled up in them. :)

  1. OMG!!!! How cute!!! How did you ever get your kitty to pose for you??? Super cute! I just want to squish him!! ;-D

  2. Adorable! I have made kitty beds like this but not with fun fur. Does she chew on it?

  3. That looks lovely cosy it’s no wonder she jumped in :-)

  4. That is the cutest thing I think I have ever seen!
Well done using up some of your stash too!

  5. Dijjit looks so comfy! Excellent cat bed.

  6. She is ADORABLE and now I want to make one of these for my kitties!!!! I weirdly love the fun fur part of it. It’s funny, my knitting group girls and I were just talking about what to use fun fur with. LOL

    • I actually had fun fur to make a fox tail, and for some reason my mom gave me a slew more of it, so I had to figure out how to use it all up. :) I wasn’t sure how it’d turn out, but I like it, too. :)

  7. Very cute! The cat loves it & you used up a bunch of stash yarn — this is full of win :-) Bonus points for using up Fun Fur!

  8. Your update made me ridiculously happy!!!! Your kitty is mighty cute and you have my dull admiration for crocheting with fun fur. I’ve tried that multiple times and failed on it just as often.

The times I’ve tried to get my kitty to sit where I want her to, it’s involved catnip. ;)

    • Fun fur hasn’t ever been a problem for me, but I’ve only done a few projects with it because I think it’s silly for anything not animal-related in some way, or for a child. :)

My cat loves laying on hand-knits/crochets so getting her in the bed wasn’t hard, and now she goes in on her own because I put it somewhere that she likes to lay. :)

  9. That’s a fabulous idea for a project! Too bad my cats would rather sleep on my chest than in a bed :P

  10. …Now I’m wondering how much yarn it would take to make a human-sized one of these for me to curl up in and read. (I have a pretty extensive stash, but I don’t think it’s that big. Sadly.)

This looks amazing, cool colours and textures and plush-awesome. I’m glad it’s also cat-approved, which is the most important part. ;)
