It’s hard to overstate my satisfaction with the Weighted Companion Cube I made for my friend Mike for his birthday. The original pattern was just stuffed and not weighted, so I made a cube out of plastic canvas and suck a mesh bag full of rocks into it before stuffing.
Here’s a picture of it next to my cat so you can get an idea of size.
The Weighted Companion Cube is from a video game called Portal. In the game, you are a test subject in a lab that has been taken over by an evil computer and you have to run through a series of tests using a portal gun that lets you easily get from one place to another by walking through portals.
You use cubes from the beginning of the game to push buttons, but partway through you are introduced to a special cube with hearts on it called the “Weighted Companion Cube”. You are repeatedly told not to fall in love with the cube and that it hasn’t any feelings, but you can see from scribblings on the wall that other test subjects have fallen in love with the cube.
At the end of this series of tests, you are forced to incinerate your new best friend to progress through the game. Someone made a video, so here it is for your reference and enjoyment.

From other comments I assume it has something to do with a video game? How clever you are to make it weighted. Great job.

If you keep reading past the cat picture I explain that it’s from a game. :) And I link to the wikipedia page, and provide a video!

Okay, first, can I just thank you so much for explaining a little bit about Portal/the Companion Cube? I’m a complete non-gamer, and while I’ve seen references to said game/cube/the cake is a lie everywhere, but never bothered to do any googling to figure out what the hell it was really about. I feel better now!
And I love your cube—I think building it around a weighted plastic canvas frame was genius, and it looks fantastic. The colours and shapes are so…pleasing. I might just fall in love with it. ;)

I’m glad my explanations are helpful to you!
As for the cake, basically you escape being incinerated by the evil computer that’s taken over the lab, and she keeps trying to entice you back to your death by telling you there’s cake. But there is no cake, and you know this b/c test subjects before you have scribbled all over the walls, “The cake is a lie!”
As a side note, I have a shirt with a piece of cake on it. The cake is saying, “I am nutritious.” And the caption is, “The cake is a liar.” =D
