After 2.5 weeks, the baby blanket was finished and gifted!

I did a small bit of modifying for this blanket, as you can see if you look at the original pattern. The colors are arranged differently and I did less squares so it would be better for swaddling than for use in a crib. Each square came out to about 4.5 inches, and then with the flat braid join and the edging, it’s about 30 inches square.

I decided I didn’t like the ch3 loops around the outer edge left by the braided join. In my opinion, it leave a piece looking unfinished. So I modified a border a little bit from my 50 crocheted borders book, and came up with this edging:

  1. ch 1, sc in same sc as joining
  2. in ch 3 space, work sc, hdc, dc, dc, hdc, sc
  3. sc in next sc
  4. Repeat around and sl st in first sc

Here is a picture of my coworker holding up the blanket in disbelief that I had actually handmade it all. I did tell her I was making her one. I guess she didn’t expect all the colors? :)

You MADE all this?

You MADE all this?

As a side note, the Loops & Threads Snuggly Wuggly Baby (purple in the blanket) is not nearly as soft as the Bernat, and is also a bit thicker. But Michaels didn’t have any purple not-shiny Bernat and I was on a schedule. I don’t know if I’d want to do an entire blanket in the scratchier Loops & Threads.

Go to Tami’s Amis to see what other people finished this week!

  1. Awww….love the baby blanket :)

  2. It looks fabulous! I can see it getting a lot of use for swaddling the baby up all cosily :)

  3. it turned out so beautiful!

  4. The blankets turned out really well, I love the colours. Your co-worker is one lucky lady to get a hand made baby blanket!

  5. Looks great! I love the layout :) Loops & Threads is iffy sometimes. It’s great for some things but you’re definitely right…as a blanket, probably not. You’d think their version of a baby yarn would be super soft though!

  6. Wow! A whole blanket in 2.5 weeks? You’re awesome. It looks like a very good size for swaddling, for putting down on the floor, for in the car and in a stroller.

  7. Hee, I love the “coworker’s look of disbelief re: handmade awesomeness!” photo. I also love the blanket, the texture and way you arranged the colour blocks are awesome. I also like your invented edging much better than the one pictured on the pattern.

  8. What a sweet blanket. I am sure it will be much loved.

  9. That is really pretty…I know it will be cherished and loved by the baby!
