This was a fun and enlightening knit, and also I’m very proud that I manged to keep up with this mystery shawl and finish just a bit after the last clue was released. I still have two other mystery shawls sitting around unfinished, haha!

This is my first shawl that is knitted from the bottom-up, which means it is knit from the lacy edge up to where it sits on your shoulders. It is also my first time using the lace cast on (similar to the knitted cast on, except the stitch is not twisted when placing it onto the needle). I’ll definitely be using both techniques again!

This particular colorway of KnitPicks Palette was hell to work with. It was rough on the fingers and didn’t feel nice at all. It’s pretty fuzzy, too, so tinking was not fun.

The shawl blocked out to about 48”x24” but I’m sure it relaxed since then.

  1. Oh, my goodness… it’s beautiful! Great job!

  2. Wow, that is absolutely stunning!
Well done on finishing, not sure I would have the patience to complete such a big project without knowing that it was going to look like, but this turned out lovely :)

    • That’s why I don’t do a mystery project unless I really like most of that designer’s other patterns. In this case, I really like Wendy’s designs, and I had cheapo yarn sitting around that I didn’t have a plan for, so I figured it wouldn’t matter if I didn’t like the shawl at the end if I used cheap yarn. :)

  3. That turned out beautiful! The yarn may have been hell to work with, but I really like the color.

  4. Very beautiful and I love the color! It’s perfect on you!!

  5. It is gorgeous!!! I can’t wait to start mine, even though I am likely adding 96 sts to the cast on row. Ugh! But I want it lots bigger.
Thanks for the link to the cast ons, I love to see other methods of cast ons.

  6. It’s beautiful! I love the color. I will agree, Palette is VERY rough, though can’t beat the price!

  7. That’s a really lovely shawl and I’m sorry to hear the colourway didn’t work so well as it’s gorgeous!

I really enjoyed seeing your progress pics as well :)

    • I really love how it came out, and I have a dress that matches it so I’m keeping it. But working with the yarn was not so fun, which is a shame because I have like half a skein left that I have to do something with.

  8. Thank you for the comment on my blog! Your shawl looks really pretty!

  9. Very nice! I really like Wendy Johnson’s stuff.
As to your question on my blog, no I didn’t design it myself. I found the pattern for it online ages ago.

  10. I think this is the first finished one of these I’ve seen, and I love it. Gorgeous yarn, to begin with (although I’m sorry its beauty didn’t also magically make it easy to work with…), and I love the pattern. It looks like it’s draping beautifully, too.

  11. It looks great. I am just starting on the final clue and i love seeing the FO’s to inspire me to continue with it xx

  12. Beautiful!

  13. The shawl is so lovely! That is such a pretty blue and will be perfect for summer. I have never knitted a shawl from the bottom up before, but it sounds like a lot of fun. Great job finishing it on time, too.

  14. Gorgeous colour, gorgeous shawl.
